Shared values, shared responsibilities: G8/Africa joint declaration

The G8 and Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Africa, and the African Union Commission, highlight the importance of an enhanced partnership between the G8 and Africa. Africa is on the move, and is becoming a new pole for global growth, even if challenges to be addressed remain, particularly in the least developed countries. Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen. You have a copy of the summit’s final declaration so, if you will, it would probably be best for me to answer your questions rather than paraphrasing the declaration. QUESTION – Mr President, in the declaration, you say, the G8 says, “Gaddafi must go.” But Gaddafi refuses to go. So what happens now?

Declaration of the G8 on the Arab springs

The changes under way in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are historic and have the potential to open the door to the kind of transformation that occurred in Central and Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The aspiration of people for freedom, human rights, democracy, job opportunities, empowerment and dignity, has led them to take control of their own destinies in a growing number of countries in the region. It resonates with and reinforces our common values.

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to thank Alain Juppé, who is Ministre d’Etat, and who is with me here. We have had quite a busy day. We started with two bilateral meetings, one with President Medvedev, which enabled us to appreciate the excellent state of relations with Russia, to finalize the question of the contract on the sale of the Mistral-type landing helicopter docks – this issue has been settled – and to shape closely concurring views on many international issues.

History always remembers those places where, at a given point in time, all creative forces of an era seem to want to converge. And it is in the hope that Paris would become the capital of the Internet for a few days that I wanted to bring you here together, just before the G8 Summit.
